I keep coming across a phrase that says "If you feel you're not ready to do it, you probably are". I really can't tell you how much this has resonated with me. Sometimes its the crazy ideas that are the most fruitful and last Tuesday was definitely one of those. I spent the day with a group of the most amazing people I could hope for who set aside time in their busy schedules to listen to me talk about photography and how I run my business. I had so many friends send me messages and prayers of luck on the morning of the workshop that there was no way I could fail. The fact alone that I woke to having an exceptionally good hair day was a good enough omen for me.
As soon as I turned the first page of my notes my heartbeat slowed, I found my rhythm and the words flowed from my mouth. I realised that if you are passionate about something it is hard to be at a loss for words and I rediscovered that I am certainly passionate about smart business practices, being productive rather than busy and photographing people in love.
We started the day with a light breakfast and coffee as we got to know one another and then began the presentation portion of the morning at 9.30am. We broke down the basics of branding and how I believe that if you brand and market your business correctly, you can free your time to do the more important things.
I had a selection of Cypress Albums and folios on display to showcase how important it is to choose products that enhance your brand and my simple, clean approach to album design.
After lunch we started shooting portion of the day where the participants were able to see how I work first hand. I was incredibly blessed to have one of my couples from 2012 model for the workshop. Priya and Scott are so open with their love for each other, I knew they would be perfect to model and they blew me out of the water.
As soon as I decided that I was going to do the workshop, I called my amazing friend Bec from Fox & Rabbit for flowers for the day. She made some the centerpieces for the room as well as the gorgeous spring inspired, bridal bouquet that brought out the subtle pink colour of the gorgeous Loui Col wedding gown.
We started off the style shoot in some very harsh mid afternoon light as I demonstrated some posing and lighting techniques. My approach is pretty simple - to find good light and put people in it and then photograph what happens.
We then moved into a sheltered courtyard where the attendees took the reins in posing and shooting our gorgeous models to test out new ideas and experiment. The workshop is designed to cater to all levels of business so if you haven't yet started your business or you're in your 3rd year of business, you will get something out of it.
During the workshop I spoke how it is important we refer vendors that we know and trust and want to work with in the future and the amazing Emma from Milla Makeup is definitely one of those creatives. Emma gave Priya a faux-bob and defined eye to bring an edge to the amazing soft and feminine Loui Col custom wedding gown.
I've already been hearing from the attendees on their thoughts on the workshop and here are some of their comments that make my cup runneth over.
"Thanks so much for yesterday! You were so warm and welcoming and the wisdom you shared has really inspired me to turn my love of photography into something that just might be able to pay the bills after all:) I feel very blessed to have been a part of your first workshop...It was the height of loveliness!" Katie
"I had the pleasure of attending this wonderful workshop and what an inspiration you are. I walked away with such a great respect for everything you do and how simple it can be by being organised with work and taking time out to enjoy life and family in the process. You have taught me so much I didn't know about running a business and you have given me such excitement about my own business I can't explain. I'm now going to begin changes and think positive about moving up in the world of photography...It was such a pleasure meeting you and your kind soul and thank you so much for allowing us into your brain and world of photography for the day!" Amy
After the shoot we went back into the classroom where I showed my super quick and efficient editing workflow and we discussed finances, pricing and how to get your life back and stop being a slave to your business.
The workshop was so amazing and I have already started fielding enquiries for the next one. I was hoping on holding them annually but if there is enough interest I would love to hold another one in early August and then again in winter 2014.
