When Annika and I were finalising the details of her portrait session, I had to admit I was getting a little excited. She mentioned ballons, a picnic and an old wicker couch artfully swiped and adopted from a lonely curbside one night. I love it when my clients take control of their session and really invest some thought into incorporating props and really enjoying the process. It makes it so much more personable and will make their images mean even more to them.

I encourage all my wedding clients to have a portrait session before their wedding to allow us to get to know each other a little better, for them to get familiar with the camera and for them to have a collection of images just a little more relaxed and intimate than what will eventuate from their wedding collection. I love the serene and relaxed feel of Annika and Tom’s collection and the fact that they trusted me implicitly to do what I do without question. I am so looking forward to their wedding later this month.

Oh, and props to Annika for still doing their session even though she had a broken foot. You would never know.

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to spend 3 days with 4 other photographers in Dunsborough. We had all taken part in Jesh de Rox’s workshop last November and decided to have a getaway to just shoot from the heart and spend some time together. I appreciated this so much because I have found that when you find you can turn your passion into your career you still need to take the time to still ignite that passion for no other reason than your own desires. We experimented with a few techniques and equipment and I managed to shoot some film which I am excited to develop in the near future.

We had a very courageous couple join us for an engagement session in Dunsborough and Busselton for us to experiment with. Despite the wild weather and 5 crazy photographers vying for prime position, Cara and Chey were absolute stars and kept their composure remarkably well. I was fortunate to have a moment to test out a tilt shift lens and had a lot of fun with it. Considering the workshop was named Tilt Shift and Tiaras, it only seemed fitting.

A big thank you to Arlene Bax, Samm Blake, Kirsty Aksentiew and Lauren Waye for their never ending generosity and openness. I appreciate it more than I can say.

Without fail at nearly every session I will take an image of feet. Bare feet. Dirty feet. Tiny little toes. Feet in designer shoes. There is something so intimate about them that I love. It could be a child’s feet and legs covered in sprinkles of sand or in this case, the miracle how each time without fail we are born with 10 tiny toes and 10 tiny fingers. I do promise though that this particular fetish only exists when I have the camera in my hands

However at just 6 days old, little Tabitha was a photographers dream. So much so that I had finished the session in record time because she was so peaceful and quiet. Come to think of it, I don’t think she fussed one little bit. She has set the bar pretty high for all my future newborns. Oh, and she’s pretty darn cute too.

A few months ago I was contacted about doing a family portrait session. Our schedules weren’t really meshing as we tried to figure out the time and place to do the shoot around Perth. It looked like by the time we finally got together all the autumn leaves would have gone leaving a rather barren landscape. So when they mentioned they were going to Broome at the end of July we decided it was a brilliant opportunity to utilise one of the most famous holiday spots in Australia as the backdrop for their images.

For this particular session, we decided to hang out on Cable Beach an hour or two before sunset while making sandcastles, searching for shells and jumping in the warm waves before running away from the “crocodiles”.

It doesn’t get much better than this

Its been a while since the girls have been on the blog. I have been wanting to update for a while but each time I did they were laying horizontal and were completely uninteresting to anyone except us who oooh and ahhh over every cute they do.

I would love to update you on their adventures and say that they have been having an excellent and exciting winter but then I would be lying. In fact, they have been hibernating like bears and sleeping in unison for what seems like months. I know Lily is dreaming of sunshine, large fields of grass and chasing balls and Lulu is in desperate need of a haircut and much needed exercise (much like her mother). Bring on Spring.

This week I was so fortunate to have been commissioned for a portrait session all the way up in Broome.

It had been far too long since I had seen that vibrant red dirt and its contrasting blue skies. I have spent more than half of my life in the north-west of Western Australia and even thought this was my first time to Broome, it kind of felt like coming home when I saw that familiar sparse landscape and felt the heat when getting off the plane onto the tarmac. I couldn’t help but smile to myself as we landed.

One morning, I packed up my gear and hit the road to explore a little and scout some potential shoot locations. This is what I saw.

At a recent family portrait session, we managed to schedule it for what turned out to be one of the worst storms in Perth. It was a horrible weekend and we were stuck inside for the shoot but the result was some moody, poignant portraits that I have fallen in love with. Creatively it was a challenge for me as I tend to work exclusively outdoors but I love the quiet feeling I get when I look at these images. I can breathe in deeply and revel in the simplicity of them.

We managed to meet up again a couple of weeks later and when the weather was a little nicer to venture outside for some very different images bursting with colour and gummy smiles, which you’ll get to see later, but in the meantime here are a few of my favourites from our first session.
