Christmas Sessions

Yes, believe it or not it is only a short 5 months before the silly season.

This season I have decided to take only a limited number of holiday specific sessions and I am in the process of creating Holiday Session Packages. The packages will start from $105 and all packages include the portrait session and some products.

Basically the intention of the Holiday Session is for clients to have short portrait session and be given a select number of images to use for Greeting Cards, custom prints for gifts or even coffee table books and brag books for extra special gifts for parents and grandparents.

The last session will be held in mid-November and I am taking bookings effective from now. So send me an email at angela@angelahiggins.com or give me a call for us to set up a time. Here is one of my favourite cards designed recently. I love the classiness and simplicity of it. I have a humongous selection that caters for all tastes.

Give me a call and I’ll hook you up :)

on my mind

My mind is quite the whirlpool sometimes with way too many thoughts and not enough outlets for them to get out. I am sitting here editing some images listening to The Virgin Suicides Soundtrack and thought I would give you an insight into my mind over the past week.

Individualism? – Who in the world would call their daughter “Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii”? Or for that matter, name their twins “Benson and Hedges”. Are parents that desperate for their child to be beaten up in the playground? Midnight Chardonnay, Violence, Twisty Poi? Enough said.

Jamie OliverI love him. All the things he is doing to educate people on food and health is to be commended. If you didn’t get a chance to watch his last two “expose’s” on the food industry, try and get hold of the tapes.

Learning – I’m all booked and confirmed for one of Jinky’s workshops in October. I can’t tell you how excited I am. This woman a phenom of a photographer and I can’t wait to get into her mind. So excited!

Reality TV - ANTM is back! Yay! So is SYTYCD. The Hills starts next month. I’m getting addicted to these shows and recently found Denise Richards’s new one online. Hallelujah – BB finally bit the dust. Only 4 seasons too late.

Home – I finally ordered some enlarged prints of ‘the girls‘ to be put up in our master bedroom. The look so good all blown up in black and white I can’t wait to show you. One of my main projects this year is to get some prints on our walls. Being a photographer, people think that your house must be littered with big, gorgeous canvas’ and gallery style framed photographs but not so much in my house. Its a bit like the shoemakers kids not having shoes.

Sacrilege? – I love Martha Stewart but finding out she has someone paint over the red soles of her Louboutin’s nearly gave me a heart attack!

Tiffany’s - Yay! Tiffany’s is finally open on King Street in Perth. I can’t wait to check it out.

Mamma Mia! – Brilliant! Phoebe and I went to see it last night and it was much more than I expected. Go see it. Julie Christie and Christine Baranski almost steal the show.

Last but not least I wanted to just say a quick Happy Birthday Mum! You are my teacher, my nurturer, my creative director, my own personal encyclopedia and much more. I don’t know what I would do without you. Love you.

project f/1.6

I knew that while in Margaret River I wanted to shoot for myself. By this I mean that I wanted to take the time to photograph for me. To push myself creatively.

I decided to take a cue from a wonderful photographer and set myself the challenge of photographing around the property we were staying at but only at a 1.6 aperture. I could change the ISO or shutter speed as much as I wanted, but the aperture was to remain at 1.6. I always shoot manually anyway but restricting myself in this manner made me push the creativity just a little further.

While editing this series I came to realise how dark and moody some of the images were. It wasn’t something I intended but in hindsight my mood was quite retrospective and I loved the wintery, wet atmosphere on the property. All in all I am pleased with how my challenge eventuated.

I walked around the property flanked by a few kookaburras that were hunting for their dinner. If you have good eyes you will see one in these images.

margaret river

Grant and I decided about 2 months ago to take the time for a weekend away together. We didn’t realise at the time that there would be a trip to NZ before it, but I am so glad we still went to Margaret River as planned.

I found a beautiful little boutique retreat about 5km out of Margaret River which was just perfect. I highly recommend Losari Retreat if you are looking for a tranquil, secluded but luxury accommodation. Here are some shots of the villa and surrounds. It was so pretty and just begging to be photographed.

We drove down to Augusta and through the national forest which was so beautiful. There had been heaps of rain leading up to our stay so everything seemed in technicolour and the greens greener and the blues bluer. I loved the tall, lanky gums that lined the roads.

My beverage of choice for the weekend. Scrumptious. If you haven’t tried Veuve Clicquot you haven’t had a true champagne. I’ve come a long way from the bourbon and diet cokes of my twenty’s :)

Just a few more shots around the property.

In a paddock opposite our villa were a couple of horses. The property offer riding lessons also and they were fun to watch and interact with. I’ve always had a thing for horses.

Here was one image from this weekend that caught my eye. The definition of renewal.

out of the office

I will be out of town from tomorrow for a long weekend with my favourite boy. We are off to Margaret River for some R&R, wine tasting and no doubt some great local food.

If you need anything, please email me and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

And because I simply can’t bear to post without a picture, this is one of my favourite shots. Hydrangea’s from my garden. They’ve only flowered once but it was worth it.

the girls

I was hanging out with the girls this afternoon while in the house all by ourselves and decided to have a short shoot with them. Its been a little while since we spent some one-on-one time together and I wanted to get some recent shots of them too.

So I plodded them on our bed and armed myself with chicken jerky and went to town. I have to say Lily is a much better model than Lulu. Lulu is way too food orientated that she’ll keep jumping off the bed and sitting in front of me for food while Lily will sit patiently where I tell her to and wait for me to bring the treat to her.

Wrangling both of them together is tough and they made me work for the shots.

I quite like this series and made sure to capture the things that I see when I look at them. In particular Lulu’s fluffy-ness as her haircut is growing out and Lily’s solemn expression. Doesn’t her eye look great by the way!.

I think Lily is still laying on the bed on the off-chance there might be some more treats. Gotta love her :)

Give your dogs a hug today. Bury your face in their fur and nuzzle them. Tell them you love them and thank every minute they are in your life.
